LOS ANGELES (Express Tribune) — August 12, 2026: Julie Andrews has confirmed that she will not return as Queen Clarisse Renaldi in The Princess Diaries 3, ending speculation over whether she would reprise her role alongside Anne Hathaway.

Andrews discussed the decision in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter while promoting her new children’s book Shy, created with her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton. She indicated that she considers herself retired from on-screen acting, although she continues to pursue creative work including writing, podcasts and voice-related projects.

Andrews portrayed Queen Clarisse in the original The Princess Diaries in 2001 and its 2004 sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. Her absence means the third installment will move forward without one of the franchise’s central characters.

Anne Hathaway Remains Attached to Sequel

The project has undergone changes during development. Hathaway previously said the creative team had experienced a breakthrough but had to restart work on the script after its direction changed.

“I’m busy making baby number three, and that has sort of taken the place of knowing when exactly I can make ‘Princess Diaries 3,’” Hathaway said while discussing the project’s progress.

She also said the team had reached a “story breakthrough” and believed it was moving in the right direction.

Andrews Focuses on Creative Work away from Camera

While Andrews is not returning to the franchise, she has continued working on projects outside conventional on-screen acting.

Her latest book, Shy, was created with her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton and is part of her continuing work in children’s literature.

Andrews has previously expressed doubts about returning for a third Princess Diaries film. In a 2022 interview, she said making another film would probably not be possible, particularly following the death of original director Garry Marshall.

Her latest comments now provide a clearer confirmation that she will not appear in the upcoming sequel.

Princess Diaries Franchise Moves Forward

The original The Princess Diaries marked Hathaway’s film debut and featured Andrews as Queen Clarisse. The sequel, released in 2004, reunited the two actresses and continued Mia’s journey as she prepared for her future as Genovia’s monarch.

Andrews has nevertheless expressed interest in seeing what Hathaway and the creative team develop for the next chapter of the franchise.

With Andrews now confirmed to be absent, the upcoming film will represent a new phase for the series while retaining Hathaway in its central role.
