ISLAMABAD (RTE Urdu) — August 28, 2026: Pakistan has announced emergency relief assistance for Nepal following catastrophic flash floods and landslides along the Nepal-China border that have killed hundreds of people and left more than 1,500 missing across Nepal and Tibet.
The disaster struck on August 26 after a major glacial collapse in the Himalayan region sent a powerful surge of water, ice, rock and mud through river valleys. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the event was likely triggered by a glacial collapse, with the resulting debris flow travelling nearly 100 kilometres and affecting populated areas along the Trishuli and Bhote Koshi rivers.

According to reports available on August 28, Nepal’s authorities had confirmed hundreds of deaths, while hundreds of people remained unaccounted for. Chinese authorities also reported deaths and hundreds missing in Tibet. Rescue teams on both sides of the border have been working to reach affected communities, but destroyed roads, bridges and other infrastructure have severely complicated the operation.
The disaster has also created a fresh threat after a barrier lake formed near the Nepal-China border began overflowing. Authorities have warned that further flooding could affect already devastated areas, prompting temporary pauses in some rescue activities and additional alerts for communities downstream.

Videos circulating on social media have shown the scale and speed of the floodwaters, although individual videos should be independently verified before their locations, dates or circumstances are presented as confirmed. The destructive surge swept through settlements and infrastructure with little warning, leaving rescue teams facing difficult terrain and severely damaged access routes.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said he had spoken with Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah to express condolences over the loss of life and destruction caused by the floods and landslides.
“I spoke with Prime Minister Balendra Shah of Nepal this afternoon to convey my heartfelt condolences over the tragic loss of precious lives and widespread devastation caused by the recent flash floods and landslides,” Sharif said.
He added that Pakistan would stand with Nepal during the crisis and provide emergency assistance.

“Pakistan stands in complete solidarity with the Government and people of Nepal in this difficult hour,” the prime minister said, adding that Pakistan was “dispatching emergency relief assistance to contribute to the ongoing relief efforts.”
Rescue and relief operations remain underway as authorities continue searching for missing people and assessing the extensive damage to homes, roads, bridges and other infrastructure.

The scale of the disaster has also prompted concern over the vulnerability of Himalayan communities to sudden glacial and landslide-related hazards, particularly as emergency teams continue monitoring unstable terrain and water bodies formed by debris.
