(BWHealthcareWorld) — September 24, 2026: As PMOS Awareness Month is observed in September, specialists are highlighting the importance of timely evaluation for women experiencing persistent irregular or absent menstrual periods, particularly when pregnancy is being planned.

Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS), previously known as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), is a hormonal and metabolic condition that can affect reproductive, metabolic and other aspects of health. The international name change was announced in May 2026 following a global consensus process involving professional and patient organisations.

Specialists at Apollo Spectra Hospital in Bengaluru said that irregular periods can sometimes indicate ovulatory dysfunction, although menstrual patterns alone do not establish whether a woman is ovulating consistently.

Dr Sunitha Sreedhar, Consultant in Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine at Apollo Spectra Hospital, said, “Irregular periods in a woman with PMOS should not be viewed only as a menstrual concern, particularly when pregnancy is being planned. They can indicate that ovulation is occurring infrequently or not at all.”

Fertility assessment, according to the specialists, can take into account factors including age, ovarian function, metabolic health and the duration of difficulty conceiving. Depending on the individual assessment, management may include lifestyle measures, treatment of hormonal or metabolic abnormalities and ovulation induction. Assisted reproductive procedures such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilisation (IVF) may also be considered in appropriate cases.

Dr Sreedhar said, “The diagnosis of PMOS does not by itself determine a woman’s fertility outcome.” She added that establishing whether ovulation is occurring regularly and assessing other possible factors are important parts of fertility evaluation.

Doctors recommend seeking medical assessment when menstrual irregularities persist, cycles become prolonged or conception does not occur as expected. Depending on the clinical situation, evaluation may include assessment of ovulation, hormone levels, ovarian reserve and metabolic health, as well as the fallopian tubes and male partner where clinically indicated.

The broader understanding of PMOS has also gained attention following its 2026 renaming. The Endocrine Society says the new terminology is intended to better reflect the condition’s endocrine and metabolic effects rather than focusing primarily on the ovaries. The organisation estimates that PMOS affects about one in eight women worldwide.

Recent reporting in Pakistan has similarly focused on PMOS as a broader health issue rather than solely a fertility condition. A September 23 report by Dawn cited specialists at Aga Khan University Hospital urging early diagnosis and personalised management, while cautioning that irregular periods alone do not establish a PMOS diagnosis.

Meanwhile, a peer-reviewed study published in Frontiers in Endocrinology on September 23 examined the relationship between insulin resistance and IVF/ICSI outcomes among women with PMOS. The research adds to ongoing investigation into how metabolic factors may relate to reproductive treatment outcomes, rather than establishing a single fertility outcome for all women with PMOS.
