India: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney touched down in Mumbai today, marking the start of his first official visit to India since taking office. The arrival at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport around 3:15 PM local time signals a pragmatic reset in Canada-India relations, following years of diplomatic strains under the previous administration.

Accompanied by his wife Diana Fox Carney and a high-level delegation that includes Foreign Minister Anita Anand along with ministers from defence, finance, and trade, Carney’s trip emphasizes economic diversification amid global uncertainties, particularly Canada’s efforts to reduce heavy reliance on the United States.

The two-day Mumbai leg focuses on business and investment. Carney will engage with CEOs, industry leaders, financial experts, innovators, educators, and representatives from Canadian pension funds active in India. Discussions will kick off toward a comprehensive trade agreement, with officials targeting completion by late 2026 or early 2027. Opportunities in energy, including uranium supply, oil, and gas, critical minerals, technology, artificial intelligence, and defence cooperation will also be explored.

Carney will then travel to New Delhi, where he is scheduled to hold delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 2 at Hyderabad House. The visit avoids Punjab, a departure from past precedents, underscoring a shift toward economic priorities over diaspora-related sensitivities.

This outreach forms part of Carney’s broader “middle powers” strategy, with subsequent stops planned in Australia and Japan through early March to build alliances and secure new partnerships in trade, security, and technology.

Both governments describe the trip as potentially history-making, with expectations of major deals in nuclear energy, clean tech, and bilateral trade growth toward ambitious targets like $70 billion by 2030. The visit reflects a thaw in ties, prioritizing mutual economic benefits in a changing global landscape.
