Fugitive Lalit Modi Apologises to Indian Government

Former IPL chairman Lalit Modi, a fugitive living in London, issued a public apology on Monday amid intense backlash over a viral video in which he referred to himself and businessman Vijay Mallya as “the two biggest fugitives of India”.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Modi wrote: “I apologise if I have hurt anyone feelings especially the Indian Government who I have the highest respect and regard for. The statement was misconstrued and was never intended to be as played out. Once again my deepest apologies.”

The controversy erupted after Modi shared a video on Instagram from a lavish party celebrating Mallya’s 70th birthday on December 18. In the clip, Modi is heard saying, “We are the two fugitives, the biggest fugitives of India,” while standing next to a smiling Mallya. The caption read: “Let’s break the internet down in India again. Happy birthday, my friend #VijayMallya. Love u.”

The post, which has since been deleted, drew sharp criticism online, with many accusing the duo of mocking Indian authorities and the justice system.

Both Modi and Mallya have been residing in the UK for years, facing serious charges in India. Modi fled in 2010 amid allegations of money laundering, tax evasion, and irregularities in IPL broadcast rights. Mallya left in 2016 over fraud and loan default cases involving over ₹9,000 crore related to the defunct Kingfisher Airlines. He was declared a fugitive economic offender in 2019.

Public reaction to Modi’s apology has been mixed, with many netizens viewing it as insincere damage control rather than genuine remorse. Some commented that true accountability would require returning to India to face legal proceedings.

The incident has reignited debates over high-profile economic offenders evading justice while living abroad. Indian authorities continue efforts to bring back such individuals through diplomatic and legal channels.
