Global LPG Prices Have Fallen—Why Are Consumers Still Paying More?

Global LPG Prices Have Fallen—Why Are Consumers Still Paying More? | Baaghi TV

By Mian Adeel Ashraf.

Pakistan appears to be operating under a peculiar economic principle. Whenever global crude oil or LPG prices rise, domestic prices increase almost immediately. Distributors and retailers justify these hikes by claiming that future imports will be more expensive, so even existing stock must be sold at higher prices.

However, when global LPG prices decline, the narrative suddenly changes. Consumers are told that the current inventory was purchased at higher prices and, therefore, retail prices cannot be reduced immediately. This raises an important question: Why does one rule apply when prices increase, but a different rule applies when prices decrease? During the recent tensions between Iran and the United States, uncertainty in global energy markets led to higher LPG prices in Pakistan. Now that international prices have eased, citizens have every right to ask why they are still not receiving the benefit of those reductions.

If the official government rate as per notification is PKR 241 per kilogram, yet consumers are reportedly paying PKR 390 to PKR 450 per kilogram , this is no longer just an inflation issue—it is also a serious question of governance and market oversight.

The biggest questions must be directed at the district and tehsil administrations. The government has established Price Control Magistrates, price monitoring committees, and enforcement mechanisms to protect consumers from profiteering. If these institutions cannot ensure compliance with officially notified prices, then what purpose are they serving? Routine inspections, fines, and enforcement actions mean little if consumers continue to pay far above the official rate.

Regulatory authorities and local administrations also owe the public a clear explanation of how LPG prices are determined. If increases in global prices are passed on to consumers almost instantly, why are decreases not reflected with the same urgency? If existing stock can be repriced upward overnight when international markets rise, why can’t the same principle be applied when prices fall? Why should consumers bear the burden of higher prices immediately, but wait indefinitely for relief?

Distributors often argue that reducing prices would result in financial losses because they purchased their inventory at higher rates. While this concern may deserve consideration, the same principle should apply consistently. If existing stock is repriced upward during periods of rising global prices, then fairness demands that existing stock should also be repriced downward when international prices decline. Economic principles and regulatory policies should not operate on double standards. For ordinary Pakistanis, inflation has already made daily life increasingly difficult. Even cooking a meal has become a financial challenge for many households. In such circumstances, weak enforcement and administrative silence only deepen public frustration and erode trust in government institutions.

The time has come for district administrations, tehsil administrations, regulatory authorities, and price control enforcement agencies to move beyond paperwork and demonstrate meaningful action. The government’s responsibility does not end with announcing official prices—it must also ensure that those prices are effectively enforced in the marketplace. Consumers deserve transparency, accountability, and, above all, fair prices.
