Sense and Sensibility Runtime Confirmed | Baaghi TV

Key Developments:

  • The new Sense and Sensibility adaptation starring Daisy Edgar-Jones has a reported runtime of 132 minutes.
  • Edgar-Jones has acknowledged the pressure of portraying a character already closely associated with previous screen adaptations.

(Digital Spy)  — September 06, 2026: The upcoming Sense and Sensibility adaptation starring Daisy Edgar-Jones will run for approximately 132 minutes, adding a new detail to one of the more anticipated literary adaptations of 2026.

Directed by Georgia Oakley and written by Diana Reid, the film reinterprets Jane Austen’s 1811 novel, with Edgar-Jones playing Elinor Dashwood and Esmé Creed-Miles portraying her younger sister Marianne. Caitríona Balfe plays their mother, Mrs Dashwood, while the ensemble also includes George MacKay, Frank Dillane and Fiona Shaw. Current film listings put the running time at 132 minutes.

The film centres on the Dashwood sisters after the death of their father leaves the family facing major financial and social difficulties. Elinor and Marianne must navigate relationships, family expectations and the limitations placed on women in their society while dealing with very different approaches to love and responsibility.

The new production arrives decades after Ang Lee’s acclaimed 1995 adaptation, which starred Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet. The latest version is therefore entering a story that already has a strong cinematic legacy.

For Edgar-Jones, taking on Elinor comes with an awareness of that history. Speaking on the Dish from Waitrose podcast, the actress explained that Austen’s work had been part of her life from an early age and described appearing in an Austen adaptation as something of a “rite of passage.”

She also acknowledged the expectations surrounding a familiar literary character.

“I think it’s sort of you feel the pressure because, you know, there’s people have a sort of love of and a kind of relationship already with the character,” Edgar-Jones said during the podcast discussion.

Rather than viewing previous performances as something that has to be replaced, she said she found inspiration in the possibility of bringing a different interpretation to an established work.

Edgar-Jones compared the process with different artists putting their own interpretations on the same song, using Jeff Buckley and Leonard Cohen’s versions of “Hallelujah” as an example. She said she was interested in allowing the new film to “breathe new life into it” while recognising that earlier interpretations could continue to exist alongside it.

The actress also praised the film’s screenplay, written by Diana Reid, saying: “Obviously, our screenplay was so beautiful.”

Edgar-Jones said she had watched previous versions of Sense and Sensibility before filming the new adaptation. She explained that she tried to absorb those interpretations before developing her own approach to Elinor.

The production is being backed by Focus Features and Working Title, with Georgia Oakley directing. Focus Features describes the film as a new take on Austen’s story centred on love and sisterhood.

The release schedule varies by territory. Focus Features lists October 16, 2026 as the US theatrical release, while its previously announced international schedule set the UK release for September 25, 2026.

With the runtime now listed at around two hours and 12 minutes, the film is set to offer audiences a full-length adaptation of Austen’s novel while giving Oakley and Reid room to present their own interpretation of the Dashwood sisters.

The film’s reception will ultimately determine how this new version is viewed alongside earlier adaptations, but Edgar-Jones’ comments indicate that the production team is approaching the material with an awareness of both its literary importance and its established screen history.
