Trump — to prioritise economic stability and ongoing trade cooperation over immediate punitive measures. As part of the deal brokered in October between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, the US agreed to shelve new 100% tariffs on Chinese imports, while China delayed implementing an export licensing regime on critical rare-earth minerals and related technology exports.

In addition to lifting sanctions, Washington has also postponed plans for stringent new export controls on advanced technologies, a move that eases pressure on Chinese high-tech firms for now.

Supporters of the decision argue it helps stabilize global markets and prevents sudden economic shocks. With supply chains already fragile, further escalation could have hurt not only US–China trade but also global investors and markets dependent on Chinese manufacturing and technology supply.
