‘Ravi River Project to be the game-changer for Lahore’
The splendid old city Lahore, on the banks of the Ravi river, was famous for its natural beauty, historical and cultural heritage. Rapid urbanization, unplanned and directionless developments led the beautiful city into a disorganized and less efficient infrastructural city. The rampant spread, unfortunately, led to its current state – no forest left.
The city, known as the “City of Gardens” now from the recent years has been categorized as the most polluted city in the world. As with a growing population, the need for water supply and storage is increasing day by day but, the water level of Lahore is continuously decreasing, this is an alarming situation for us. We have no reservoir to store water properly, which we usually get from rains.

To rehabilitate and develop the ecosystem of River Ravi, the PTI government has practically approved and started the project of a planned city, The Ravi Urban Development Project, at the cost of 5 trillion Pakistani Rupees.
This will be the longest river line development project in history, and the first planned city of Pakistan in this century.
The idea of such a type of urban development on the Ravi river front was first suggested by the Deputy Commissioner of Lahore in 1947. After him, Mian Amir chairman of Duniya Media Group in 2001, and then Nazim of Lahore relaunched this idea.
Later under the government of Pervaiz Elahi, it was taken on board but never gone practically. In 2013 Punjab Government took it up, under the leadership of Shahbaz Sharif. In 2014 LDA hired a Singaporean-based architecture company to work on the project but unfortunately, this got stuck again.

In the past, there was a plan to span over 18,000 hectares, but in August 2020, the PTI government announced that they have revised the area of the river front to be 40,000 hectares.
Prime Minister Imran Khan has laid the foundation of the first phase of the Ravi River in August 2020. The longest river front project in the history of the world will be completed in three phases.
Ravi City will be Pakistan’s first multi-purpose project in which 13 special centers: Knowledge City, Medical City, Innovation City as well as environment-friendly development projects are included. The government is hoping that this mega project will provide shelters to millions of citizens and billions of dollars of investment.
In its first phase, 46 km long river front, 3 barrages, 6 water treatment plants, and 1.8 million residential units and urban forests will also be constructed.
Roads will be construed in 2nd phase and in the third phase, health knowledge and innovation city will be construed. The first phase of this project has an estimated revenue of about 400 billion rupees, over an area of 5,000 acres, and the estimated time will be of three years, it is supposed to be completed in 2023.

Out of 5,000 acres, 3,000 acres will be used for river maintenance for flood protection and the remaining 2,000 acres will be used for construction.
The Ravi project also includes rehabilitating the dying river, Ravi. We have seen lower water levels of the river with each passing year. In the development of the river front line, the depth of the Ravi river will be further augmented to handle the flood threats, which will control floods in the future.
The 46 kilometers river front, three barrages, six water treatment plants, and urban forests. This will ensure the survival of our generations and contribute majorly towards sustainable development. Six water treatment plants constructed under the Ravi City project those plants will have the capacity to treat 0.58 billion liters of water per day. This purified water will irrigate 75,000 acres of land and will also help to maintain groundwater levels.
Under the Ravi City project, 3 urban forests will be established and more than 6 million trees will be planted. The channelization of the Ravi river and the construction of barrages will result in the passage of 500,000 cusecs of water. This will reduce the risk of flooding from Lahore and settlements along the Ravi River.

Knowledge City in Ravi City will also be established. RUDA (Ravi Urban Development Authority) officials are saying that work in this regard has already begun, several private universities have expressed interest in setting up their own campuses. The establishment of Knowledge City and Tech City will make it easier for the younger generation to access modern sciences.
Prime Minister Imran Khan is enthusiastic about this project, and he is on the back of this Urban Development Project, all these things were decided in several meetings that were conducted with him. PM Khan is determined to minimize the environmental degradation which is taking a toll in the beautiful city of Lahore.
An environmentally friendly project of this kind will guarantee the survival of our future generations by regenerating greenery and by relieving Lahore from existing pressure as well as it will contribute to Pakistan’s economic development.
