Saudi Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman (MBS) has expressed sympathy for Iran, stating that ‘good relations’ have been sought in recent talks between rivals in Baghdad.
According to reports, the countries have been embroiled in rivalry in lieu of regional dominance following the killing of Shiite cleric back in 2016 which led to the attack on the office of the Saudi diplomatic mission in Iran. Recently, the United Nations has welcomed the Houthi offer to halt attacks on Saudi Arabia.
Muhammad bin Salman said in a televised interview with the Middle East Broadcasting Center on Tuesday that Iran is a neighbouring country and we want ‘good relations’ with them. Crown Prince MBS added, “We do not want the situation in Iran to be difficult. On the contrary, we want Iran to develop; and to bring prosperity to the region and the world.”
The Saudi Crown Prince stated that Riyadh is working with regional and global partners to find a solution to Tehran’s ‘negative behavior’. This includes Tehran’s support for nuclear and programs and proxies around the Middle East.
During the 90-minute interview, MBS expressed hope that Saudi Arabia and Iran overcome the differences and establish a positive relationship which may be mutually beneficial.
