Former South African Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool was expelled from the United States as persona non grata after the US accused him of supporting Palestine and Iran. However, upon his return alongside his wife Rosieda, he was given a grand welcome at the Cape Town Airport.
A large crowd of people came to the airport to welcome him. The premise became so crowded that the authorities had to seek police intervention to get out.

Addressing the public at the airport, Ebrahim Rasool said, “A declaration of persona non grata is meant to humiliate you, but when you return to crowds like this, and with warmth … like this, then I will wear my persona non grata as a badge of dignity.” He added, “It was not our choice to come home, but we come home with no regrets. We were expelled for raising our voice against American policies.”
Ebrahim Rasool stressed that it is important for South Africa to improve relations with the United States, as former US President Donald Trump made several accusations against South Africa and cut off funding to the country. These accusations included the accusation of supporting the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas and Iran. In addition, the Trump administration had also accused South Africa of promoting policies against white people.

Ebrahim Rasool said in his speech that they were expelled for refusing to put their interests in the American swing. South Africa filed a petition against Israel in the International Criminal Court in December 2023 for genocide in Gaza, after which more than 10 countries around the world supported it.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued an executive order to expel Ebrahim Rasoul from the country. In a post on X, Rubio alleged that the former diplomat is an anti-American and anti-Trump politician, and that his policies are in conflict with US interests.
