NICVD completes 500 pediatric heart rhythm procedures

KARACHI (Express Tribune) — August 08, 2026: The National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) Karachi has reached a milestone of 500 procedures through its dedicated pediatric electrophysiology programme, providing treatment valued at nearly Rs1 billion to children free of charge.
The programme focuses on children with potentially serious heart rhythm disorders and has expanded access to specialised treatment for conditions that previously had limited treatment options in Pakistan. The milestone was reported by The Express Tribune on August 8.

NICVD’s pediatric electrophysiology service treats children with abnormally slow heart rhythms who may require pacemakers, patients with unusually fast heart rhythms, and children or adolescents with inherited conditions that can increase the risk of sudden cardiac arrest.
Dr Muhammad Mohsin, head of the Pediatric Electrophysiology Programme, said such disorders can be complex but are often treatable.
“Heart rhythm disorders in children are complex but largely treatable,” Dr Mohsin said, noting that many cases can be congenital or hereditary.
Minimally Invasive Treatment
According to Dr Mohsin, children with rapid heart rhythms may undergo electrophysiology studies and catheter ablation. The minimally invasive procedure allows doctors to identify abnormal electrical pathways in the heart and treat the affected tissue without opening the chest.

The procedure uses a catheter inserted through a blood vessel and advanced toward the heart, with three-dimensional mapping technology helping specialists identify the source of an abnormal rhythm.
Dr Mohsin said the cost of treating an individual patient can range from Rs1 million to Rs1.5 million, but procedures carried out under the NICVD programme have been provided free of charge.
Awareness and Follow-up
Dr Mohsin said awareness of pediatric cardiac rhythm disorders was extremely limited in Pakistan before 2021 but has improved since then.
The programme now receives around 30 to 35 patients a day in its outpatient department, while approximately 200 families remain under long-term follow-up, according to the programme head.
He identified recurrent fainting, poor physical growth, chest discomfort and persistent symptoms despite medication among warning signs that may warrant medical assessment.

“Many cases are congenital or hereditary, with multiple members of the same family sometimes affected,” Dr Mohsin said.
NICVD’s current listings confirm Dr Muhammad Mohsin as an Assistant Professor of Paediatric Electrophysiology, alongside dedicated pediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery services.
Expanding Specialised Cardiac Care
The 500-procedure milestone highlights the growing availability of specialised pediatric electrophysiology services in Pakistan. NICVD describes itself as a major tertiary cardiac-care institution and provides dedicated pediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery services.
The programme’s continued focus on diagnosis, treatment and long-term follow-up could help improve access to specialised care for children with cardiac rhythm disorders, while greater public awareness may encourage families to seek medical assessment when warning signs appear.
