Foodborne Illnesses May Cause Long-Term Gut Problems

Key Developments:
- Food infections may cause lasting gut problems
- Up to 20% may develop post-infection IBS
- Symptoms can persist for months or years
(Oman Daily Observer) — September 01, 2026: Foodborne infections may have effects that continue well after the initial illness has cleared, with research indicating that some people can develop persistent digestive problems months or even years later.
A report published by Oman Observer on September 1 highlighted growing evidence surrounding post-infection irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a condition that can develop after an intestinal infection caused by bacteria, viruses or parasites.

Research cited in the report suggests that around 10% to 20% of people who experience an intestinal infection may subsequently develop symptoms including abdominal pain, diarrhoea and an urgent need to use the bathroom. The condition is known as post-infection IBS.
The report highlighted the experience of Ericka Ratliff, a 55-year-old woman from Michigan who continued to experience abdominal pain and sudden urges to use the bathroom two months after contracting cyclospora.

“It’s very unpredictable,” Ratliff said, describing her stomach as “extremely angry.”
She also said she was concerned that her gut would “never be the same again.”
Post-infection IBS does not affect everyone who contracts foodborne illness. A 2024 meta-analysis cited in subsequent reporting found different rates depending on the type of infection, with the condition reported more frequently following bacterial and parasitic infections than viral infections.

Foodborne pathogens associated with post-infection digestive problems include Campylobacter, Salmonella, Shigella, certain strains of E. coli and some parasites. Researchers are still investigating the extent to which other infections, including cyclospora, can contribute to prolonged symptoms.
Doctors say persistent digestive symptoms following an intestinal infection should not automatically be assumed to be IBS. Other possible causes, including an infection that has not fully cleared, inflammatory bowel disease and temporary lactose intolerance, may need to be ruled out.
The long-term effects also mean that the impact of a foodborne illness can extend beyond the period when the initial infection is counted. People who continue experiencing abdominal pain, diarrhoea or bowel urgency after recovering from an infection may require medical assessment.

The Oman Observer report noted that post-infection IBS can improve over time, although the duration varies from person to person. Research cited in the report indicates that around half of affected patients may recover within one to four years.

The findings underline the importance of food safety and appropriate medical follow-up after serious gastrointestinal infections, particularly when symptoms persist or return after the initial illness appears to have resolved.
