Punjab, Huawei Expand AI and Digital Cooperation

LAHORE (Dawn News) — August 28, 2026: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has agreed with Chinese technology company Huawei to expand cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI), digital infrastructure and smart public services.

During a meeting with senior Huawei officials in China, Maryam Nawaz invited the company to invest in the Nawaz Sharif IT City. The two sides agreed to train 1,000 young people from Punjab as Huawei master trainers, while 300 women trainers will receive AI training.

The meeting also covered a proposal to establish an Artificial Intelligence Delivery Unit in Punjab and plans for six data centres at the Nawaz Sharif IT City, including a sovereign data centre.

Officials also agreed to appoint a focal person to improve coordination between Huawei and the Pakistani government. Possible cooperation in smart cities, command centres, healthcare, education, agriculture and manufacturing was discussed as part of a wider roadmap for AI, cloud technology and digital infrastructure.

Maryam Nawaz said AI development was a major priority for her government.

“Talent development and inclusive access to technology are key pillars of Punjab’s strategy,” she said, adding that the province would work on cloud computing, digital infrastructure and locally developed AI models.

The chief minister has set a target of making Punjab the most AI-enabled province in South Asia by 2029, according to the Punjab government.

Separately, Maryam Nawaz announced the Punjab Data Lake during the Big Data Industry Expo 2026 in China. She described it as the province’s first dedicated data centre and said it would form part of a wider digital infrastructure strategy.

She said the OneMap system integrates more than 12 terabytes of geospatial information from 31 departments and over 6,000 datasets.

“OneMap can help in planning, resolving land-related disputes and promoting more informed urban development,” Maryam Nawaz said.

The Punjab government says the data infrastructure will support planning and public-service delivery, while the Huawei discussions are focused on developing AI skills, digital infrastructure and technology-based public services.

The proposed facilities and partnerships will require further implementation and formal arrangements before their full impact can be assessed.
