Japan’s Engineering Marvels Expose Pakistan’s Failures

Today, as I woke up for my morning tea, I just couldn’t resist catching the news on TV via Al Jazeera, which couldn’t possibly retain my attention longer than ten minutes. As I began to scramble further, my eyes caught sight of a video about Japan. So I played that and watched till the end.

I am totally in awe, almost gazing with wonderment. The movie simply says it all. It features the most spectacular engineering marvels. Remember, Japan was bombed beyond recognition. How it rose from the ashes bumfuddles the reader to his absolute bewilderment.

Let’s start from the bridges. They are a powerful structure of cement and steel; one of their most iconic structures stands tall at 360 meters above the sea. Remember, geologically, Japan is most challenged as far as natural calamitous challenges are concerned.

But their fears have been addressed technically through their ingenuity and engineering prowess.

They have one of the fastest-moving trains, which can go up to 357 km — the Maglev. It literally floats in the air. It won’t flip over or jackknife in the event of any such terrifying activity.

Then there is the most interesting yet winding road that meanders through the mountains. The road is unfructuous, yet no compromise on the quality.

The same is for the famous cable ropeway. It transports 2 million passengers annually. It is built between the most breathtaking valleys. Nothing seems out of sync. The famous dam, where the water appears like a green gem, baffles the viewer completely.

Be it the seas, the rivers, the bridges, everything seems blending with nature. That’s the beauty of their craftsmanship. How artfully and aesthetically they have done these mega structures is simply mind-boggling.

It is so disappointing to note that we have made a ramshackle of our rail network. It is 70 years since the birth of Pakistan. It has remained intact in form and nature, unlike other countries like Japan, Vietnam, and the European countries, which, after the bombing of World War 2, rose back again.

We, as a country, have done little to change the life of a common man. Instead, we rose the bar by imposing draconian taxes, whereby creating innumerable problems in the day-to-day living of our general public. Time hangs heavy on them.

The cronyism, the nepotism, bribes, kickbacks have put the poor people, or for that matter, the citizens, to carry on with little hope. The ones who matter have been made voiceless.

Our country is one where charlatans abound, meritocracy is becoming a dream.

Kakistocracy is in vogue.
