Under the Punjab AIDS Control Programme, free HIV screening and patient-friendly counselling services will be prioritised, following directives issued by Provincial Minister for Primary and Secondary Health Khawaja Imran Nazir and Secretary Health Nadia Saqib to the Health and Population Welfare Department.
Director Punjab AIDS Control Programme, Dr Naveed Akhtar Malik, said that special clinics have been fully activated at Tehsil Headquarters Hospitals (THQs) and District Headquarters Hospitals (DHQs) across the province. These facilities are offering free HIV screening, PCR tests and CD4 tests to individuals at risk.

Dr Malik said the programme is targeting vulnerable groups, including intravenous drug users, individuals exposed to contaminated syringes during work-related injuries, and sex workers. Patients who test positive are being provided free medicines along with counselling services aimed at supporting treatment adherence and improving quality of life.
He added that an official website of the Health and Population Welfare Department has also been launched as part of a public awareness campaign to provide information on prevention, testing and treatment.

A modern Punjab Public Health Laboratory in Lahore has been linked with the AIDS Control Programme to receive samples from all districts, conduct testing and issue reports, ensuring timely and accurate diagnosis.
Health officials noted that with proper medication and care, AIDS is now a manageable condition, and the initiative is aimed at reducing stigma, encouraging early diagnosis and strengthening public health response across Punjab.
