Key Developments:

  • Two Grant County cases linked to the Wisconsin measles outbreak.
  • Outbreak reaches 36 confirmed and three probable cases.

WISCONSIN (wkow.com) — August 19, 2026: A measles outbreak in southwestern Wisconsin has spread to Grant County, with health authorities confirming two cases linked to infections previously identified in Iowa and Lafayette counties.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) and Grant County Health Department confirmed the two cases on August 18, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the regional outbreak to 36, alongside three probable cases.

The outbreak is currently centred on Grant, Iowa and Lafayette counties. Iowa County has recorded the largest number of confirmed cases, followed by Lafayette County, according to state health authorities.

Most Cases reported among Unvaccinated People

Health officials said a large majority of the cases have occurred among people who were not vaccinated against measles.

According to the information provided by local health officials, more than half of the affected people are children between the ages of 5 and 17. Two people have required hospitalisation.

Wisconsin DHS has identified people who are unvaccinated as being at particular risk as the outbreak continues.

The agency said the two Grant County cases are epidemiologically connected to cases in Iowa and Lafayette counties, indicating that the newly confirmed infections are part of the existing regional outbreak rather than an unrelated cluster.

Health Officials warn about Complications

Local health officials have stressed that measles can cause serious complications, particularly among vulnerable patients.

Carla Belken of Grant Regional Health Care said the disease should not be considered harmless.

“It’s not completely benign, and that’s the one thing we really want to impress upon the public,” Belken said, adding that measles can lead to complications affecting vision, hearing and the brain and can, in severe cases, be fatal.

Health authorities also warn that measles is highly contagious. The virus can remain suspended in the air for a period after an infected person coughs or sneezes, allowing exposure even when the infected individual is no longer present.

Vaccination remains Key Prevention Measure

Belken also highlighted the effectiveness of vaccination against measles.

“This is completely vaccine-preventable at 97% efficacy,” she said, urging people who are concerned about their vaccination status to check their records, particularly ahead of the new school year.

Wisconsin health authorities identify the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine as the primary method of preventing measles infection. State surveillance data has previously shown that measles cases are concentrated among people who are unvaccinated or whose vaccination status is unknown.

People who are unsure of their vaccination history can check with healthcare providers or the Wisconsin Immunization Registry.

Officials Monitoring possible Exposures

Despite the growing number of cases, health authorities said they had not identified any public locations where people may have been exposed in connection with the latest Grant County cases.

Health officials are continuing investigations to determine whether additional infections are connected to the existing outbreak.

Residents who develop symptoms consistent with measles are being advised to remain at home and contact a healthcare provider. Officials recommend calling ahead before visiting a medical facility so staff can take steps to limit potential exposure to other patients.

Wisconsin’s immunisation rules provide for public-health measures during substantial outbreaks, including possible exclusion of students who have not received required immunisations when ordered by state health authorities.

As of August 18, Wisconsin had recorded 38 confirmed and three probable measles cases statewide in 2026, with 36 confirmed and three probable cases belonging to the southwestern Wisconsin outbreak in Grant, Iowa and Lafayette counties.

Health authorities continue to investigate the outbreak and have urged residents to remain alert to symptoms and review their vaccination status through appropriate healthcare or public-health channels.
