A New Weapon Appears

On 14 August 2025, during Pakistan’s Independence Day celebrations, the Pakistan Air Force quietly displayed a new unmanned aircraft that immediately attracted the attention of defense observers.

Its name was Al-Murtajiz.

At first glance, it looked like another drone. But a closer examination suggested that this could be something considerably more important.

The PAF did not release detailed specifications. However, personnel present at the event reportedly described.

Al-Murtajiz is a ground-launched unmanned system capable of performing more than one mission, including interception of air-to-surface weapons such as subsonic cruise missiles and one-way or kamikaze attacks. The displayed model was subsequently removed, adding even more mystery around the program.

This is why I believe Al-Murtajiz deserves serious attention.

It may not simply be another Pakistani drone.

It could be a glimpse into how Pakistan intends to fight the next air war.

What Exactly is Al-Murtajiz?

At this stage, we should be careful.

The PAF has not publicly announced its official range, speed, warhead, or operational status. Therefore, many figures appearing on social media should not be presented as established facts.

But the design itself tells us something.


The displayed model appeared to have a small air intake, suggesting a miniature jet engine. It also had narrow folding wings and a streamlined, low-observable shape. These characteristics are quite different from the conventional slow, propeller-driven UAVs normally associated with reconnaissance.

This suggests that Al-Murtajiz is intended to be a faster and more expendable unmanned combat aircraft.

In simple words, Pakistan appears to be moving from the traditional concept of a “drone that watches” toward a drone that can fight, deceive, intercept and, if necessary, sacrifice itself to achieve its mission.

How Far Could it Fly?

This is probably the biggest question.

The honest answer is: we don’t know yet.

The PAF has not released an official range.

However, based on its apparent jet propulsion, aerodynamic configuration, and intended role, I believe Al-Murtajiz is unlikely to be merely a very short-range battlefield drone.

A 300–500 kilometer class range would be a reasonable analytical possibility, although this should be regarded as an estimate rather than a confirmed specification.

Some open-source assessments have suggested high-subsonic performance, but again, these are assessments rather than official PAF figures.

If future testing shows that Al-Murtajiz can travel several hundred kilometers at high subsonic speed, its significance would increase considerably.

At that point, the distinction between a drone, loitering munition, and small cruise missile would become increasingly blurred.

Its Most Interesting Role may be Defensive

When people hear “suicide drone,” they normally think about attacking ground targets.

But Al-Murtajiz appears to have another potentially important role.

According to reporting from the 2025 display, the PAF described it as capable of point interception against air-to-surface weapons, including subsonic cruise missiles.

This is extremely interesting.

Imagine a hostile cruise missile approaching a Pakistani military installation.

Instead of using a very expensive air-defence interceptor every time, a relatively inexpensive unmanned interceptor could potentially be sent against the incoming weapon.

If this concept works reliably, it could provide another layer of defense.

It would not replace systems such as surface-to-air missiles or fighter aircraft.

Rather, it could become another weapon in Pakistan’s defensive toolbox.

The Offensive Role

The other obvious role is attack.

A jet-powered expendable drone could potentially be used against important military targets without putting a Pakistani pilot at risk.

It could be used against targets such as:

  • Air-defence installations
  • Radar positions
  • Communications facilities
  • Military logistics
  • Command and control infrastructure
  • Other high-value military targets

The real attraction is not simply the destructive power of one drone.

It is numbers.

A fighter aircraft is extremely expensive and carries a highly trained pilot.

An expendable unmanned aircraft does not.

If Pakistan can manufacture such systems economically and in large numbers, it could create a completely different problem for an adversary.

Why it Matters Against India

This is where Al-Murtajiz becomes strategically important.

India has a much larger defense budget, a larger military, and a much larger industrial base.

Pakistan can not realistically compete with India by trying to build an equal number of every weapon system.

Pakistan, therefore, needs something different:

Affordable weapons that can create disproportionately high costs for the enemy.

This is the real attraction of unmanned warfare.

Suppose a relatively inexpensive drone forces an adversary to activate expensive radars, launch expensive interceptors, divert fighter aircraft, and expose air-defence positions.

Even if the drone is eventually destroyed, it may already have achieved part of its purpose.

And if several drones are used together, the problem becomes much more complicated.

The Saturation Factor

Future warfare will not necessarily be about sending one weapon toward one target.

It may be about sending many different weapons at the same time.

Imagine an Indian air-defence commander suddenly facing:

  • Decoy drones
  • Electronic warfare
  • Loitering munitions
  • Cruise missiles
  • Combat aircraft
  • Different types of UAVs

The defender has to decide:

  • Which target is real?
  • Which target is a decoy?
  • Which target carries the warhead?
  • Which target should receive the expensive interceptor?

That confusion itself can become a weapon.

This is why I believe Al-Murtajiz should be looked at as part of a much bigger picture.

Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM -T)

The most important development may not actually be Al-Murtajiz itself.

It may be the PAF’s move toward Manned-Unmanned Teaming — MUM-T.

The basic idea is simple.

Instead of sending one fighter aircraft into a dangerous environment and asking the pilot to do everything, the fighter can operate with several unmanned aircraft.

The manned aircraft becomes the brain.

The drones become additional eyes, weapons, and, when necessary, expendable assets.

A future Pakistani fighter could theoretically operate alongside unmanned systems performing different tasks.

One drone searches.

Another jams enemy electronics.

Another acts as a decoy.

Another attacks an air-defence position.

Another carries out a one-way strike.

This is the direction in which many advanced air forces are moving, and open-source analysis has linked Al-Murtajiz to Pakistan’s broader MUM-T ambitions.

Why Pakistan Needs This Capability

There is a simple strategic reality.

Pakistan cannot afford to lose expensive fighter aircraft and trained pilots unnecessarily.

If an unmanned aircraft can perform a dangerous mission instead, Pakistan gains an important advantage.

This does not mean drones will replace fighter aircraft.

They will not.

A modern fighter will remain essential for air superiority, interception, command and control, and many other missions.

But the fighter of the future may no longer fight alone.

It may have several unmanned companions.

That is where Al-Murtajiz becomes important.

The Lessons of Modern Warfare

The wars in Ukraine and the Middle East have demonstrated how rapidly drones and relatively inexpensive unmanned systems are changing warfare.

The old assumption that only expensive aircraft and missiles can have strategic impact is disappearing.

Today, a relatively inexpensive unmanned system can force an opponent to spend enormous amounts of money defending against it.

For Pakistan, this lesson is particularly important.

We need weapons that are not only technologically advanced but also affordable, indigenous, and capable of being produced in large numbers.

The Real Question Is Not Its Range

People will naturally ask:

Is Al-Murtajiz 300 km?

500 km?

More?

The range is important, but I believe it is not the most important question.

The real questions are:

  • How many can Pakistan produce?
  • How accurate are they?
  • How resistant are they to electronic warfare?
  • Can they operate together?
  • Can they communicate with Pakistani fighters?
  • Can they perform different missions from the same basic platform?

And most importantly:

  • Can Pakistan produce them cheaply enough to use them in large numbers?

If the answer to these questions is yes, Al-Murtajiz could become considerably more important than its relatively small size suggests.

There is also a psychological and strategic dimension.

The appearance of Al-Murtajiz tells India that Pakistan is not limiting its future airpower development to fighter aircraft and conventional missiles.


Pakistan is also investing in distributed, unmanned, and potentially attritable warfare.

That means India’s air-defence planners may increasingly have to consider not only Pakistani fighters and cruise missiles but also large numbers of relatively inexpensive unmanned systems.

This complicates planning.

And in warfare, making the enemy’s planning more complicated is itself an advantage.

Conclusion

At present, we should not exaggerate Al-Murtajiz.

It has been displayed publicly, but its detailed specifications remain unknown. Its exact range, speed, payload, and operational status have not been officially disclosed.

But we should not underestimate it either.

The design and the roles reportedly described by PAF personnel indicate that Pakistan is working toward a new generation of multi-role, jet-powered unmanned combat systems.

In my assessment, Al-Murtajiz could eventually become useful for precision attacks, air-defence interceptions, decoy missions, electronic warfare, and manned-unmanned operations.

Its possible range may eventually place it in the several-hundred-kilometre category, but only official testing will establish the real figure.

For Pakistan, the greatest advantage will not come from having one sophisticated drone.

It will come from having hundreds of affordable unmanned systems working together with JF-17s, J-10Cs, future combat aircraft, cruise missiles, electronic warfare, and Pakistan’s wider air-defence network.

That is the future of air warfare.

Perhaps the most important message behind the brief appearance of Al-Murtajiz on 14 August 2025 was not what Pakistan showed us.

It was what Pakistan did not show us.
