Oil Prices Rise as US-Iran Tensions Escalate and Supply Tightens

Key Developments:
- Global oil prices rose nearly 1% following fresh U.S. military strikes on Iranian targets and continued concerns over energy supplies.
- U.S. crude inventories recorded another significant weekly decline, indicating tighter supply conditions.
- Ongoing tensions involving Iran, the United States, Israel and regional actors continue to create uncertainty in global energy markets.
LONDON (Reuters) — June 10, 2026: International oil prices moved higher on Wednesday as traders reacted to renewed military tensions between the United States and Iran, alongside fresh data showing a substantial decline in U.S. crude oil inventories.
Brent crude futures gained nearly one percent to trade above $92 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude also posted gains as markets assessed the impact of geopolitical developments and tightening supplies.

The increase followed reports of new U.S. military strikes against Iranian targets. The strikes came after U.S. President Donald Trump vowed to respond to the reported downing of a U.S. Apache helicopter, according to U.S. officials.
Market analysts noted that fears of supply disruptions continue to support oil prices despite previous signs of easing tensions. Earlier this week, crude prices had fallen to multi-week lows after Iran and Israel halted direct exchanges of fire, raising hopes of a broader de-escalation.
However, those hopes remain uncertain. Iranian officials have stated that hostilities could resume if Israeli military operations against Hezbollah continue in Lebanon. Israeli authorities have maintained that their security operations will continue based on military assessments.

Energy markets remain particularly focused on the strategic Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important shipping routes for oil and liquefied natural gas. Iranian authorities have continued restrictions affecting maritime traffic in the area, while Washington has maintained pressure measures targeting Iranian ports and shipping activities.
On the supply side, industry data cited by market sources indicated that U.S. crude inventories fell by more than nine million barrels during the latest reporting week. Gasoline inventories also declined, suggesting continued demand and tighter market conditions.
The inventory figures, based on data from the American Petroleum Institute, reinforced concerns about available supply, particularly as the United States has increased crude exports to international markets during recent months.
Commenting on Gulf shipping activity, the U.S. Energy Secretary said vessel traffic and energy exports through the Strait of Hormuz were increasing despite ongoing negotiations and regional tensions.

Analysts said a combination of geopolitical uncertainty, reduced inventories and concerns about energy transportation routes has contributed to upward pressure on prices. Financial markets continue to monitor developments closely as diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions between Washington and Tehran remain ongoing.

Recent market commentary published during June 9–10 indicated that investors remain sensitive to any developments affecting Gulf shipping lanes, regional security and crude production levels, all of which could influence oil prices in the coming weeks.
While traders welcomed signs of continued energy flows through major export routes, uncertainty surrounding regional security remains a significant factor shaping global commodity markets.
