ISLAMABAD — August 14, 2026: Pakistan is marking its 79th Independence Day on Friday with nationwide celebrations, as fireworks illuminated the skies over Islamabad and people gathered in public spaces carrying national flags and wearing green and white.

In his televised address, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan wanted peace but warned that its desire for peace should not be interpreted as weakness.
“Every drop of water is our red line,” Sharif said, referring to Pakistan’s concerns over its water resources and the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty by India following the 2025 conflict.
He also referred to the four-day military confrontation between Pakistan and India in May 2025. India had attributed the initial attack in Indian-administered Kashmir to Pakistan-backed militants, a charge Islamabad denied.
The two nuclear-armed neighbours subsequently exchanged missile, drone and other strikes before agreeing to a ceasefire.
Sharif said Pakistan would respond if its sovereignty or water interests were threatened, while maintaining that the country sought peace rather than confrontation.
