From TRG-300 to Air Launch: What Turkey’s New Supersonic Missile Means for Pakistan

The modern battlefield is increasingly removing the old boundaries between artillery rockets, ballistic missiles, air-launched weapons, and unmanned combat aircraft.
Turkey is providing a particularly interesting example of this transformation.
The recent successful Turkish test of the UAV-300 supersonic air-launched ballistic missile from the Bayraktar AKINCI deserves serious attention in Pakistan—not simply because Turkey has developed another long-range missile, but because of the development philosophy behind it.

Turkey has demonstrated that technology and experience originating in its ground-launched rocket and missile family can be carried into the air domain.
That is the real lesson for Pakistan.
Turkey’s Important Lesson.
From Ground Launch to Air Launch
Turkey’s TRG-300 is a 300-mm guided missile used with Roketsan’s multiple-barrel rocket launcher system. Roketsan officially gives the TRG-300 a range of up to 120 kilometers, depending on variant and launch conditions.
Turkey subsequently developed air-launched members of this broader missile family. Public reporting identifies the UAV-230 as being derived from the TRG-230, while the newer 300 ER takes the concept much further, offering an air-launched weapon publicly advertised at 500+ kilometres, depending on launch conditions.
This is a fascinating approach.
Instead of treating an air-launched missile as something that must always be designed completely from scratch, Turkey has demonstrated the value of leveraging an existing missile-development ecosystem and adapting its technology for airborne launch.
Of course, an air-launched missile is not simply a ground missile with its launcher removed.
Its structure, aerodynamics, propulsion profile, guidance, release mechanism, thermal environment, aircraft integration, and flight trajectory all have to be redesigned and tested.
But the important point is that the existing technological foundation can shorten the road toward a new capability.
This is where the Turkish experience becomes extremely relevant to Pakistan.
The Recent AKINCI Demonstration
On September 11, 2026, Turkey’s Bayraktar AKINCI successfully launched the new UAV-300 and struck a maritime target at a range of more than 250 kilometres Turkish reporting describes the weapon as an air-launched ballistic missile, approximately five meters long, weighing around 900 kilograms, with a warhead exceeding 150 kilogram The same reporting states that, depending on launch altitude, the UAV-300 can potentially reach beyond 500 kilometers.
This is significant because the launching aircraft itself does not have to fly all the way to the target.
The aircraft becomes a mobile missile launch platform.
And that changes the strategic equation.

A fighter or large UCAV can carry the weapon forward, launch it from considerable altitude and speed, and then withdraw while the missile continues toward its target.That is the essence of modern stand-off warfare.
The 500-Kilometre Possibility
Turkey has also presented the 300 ER as a long-range air-launched ballistic/aeroballistic weapon for fighter aircraft and UCAVs, with public reporting citing a range of more than 500 kilometres under suitable launch conditions.
This is particularly important for Pakistan.
Why?
Because Pakistan’s future air warfare requirement is not simply for another air-to-air missile or another conventional air-to-ground weapon.
Pakistan needs long-range stand-off weapons that can be launched without forcing the aircraft deep into an enemy’s integrated air-defence environment.
This becomes especially relevant in the context of India’s increasingly sophisticated air-defence architecture.
The S-400 Challenge
The Indian deployment of the Russian S-400 has changed the strategic environment.
The answer, however, is not simply to build a missile with a range greater than the advertised range of an S-400.
Modern air defense is a network involving sensors, command systems, interceptors, electronic warfare, and multiple layers.
The more sensible objective is to create a stand-off strike capability in which the launching aircraft remains at a safer distance while the weapon travels the remaining distance to the target.
A 400–500 km-class air-launched weapon would therefore be extremely valuable.
It would not make an aircraft invulnerable.
It would, however, create a much more difficult problem for the defender.
And here Pakistan has an interesting opportunity.
Pakistan should carefully study the Turkish experience and ask a very simple question:
If Turkey could take the technological foundation of its ground-launched missile family and develop an air-launched long-range weapon, why should Pakistan not explore a similar pathway?

The Fatah family provides an obvious technological foundation for thinking about such a possibility.
Rather than starting from zero, Pakistan could explore the development of an air-launched Fatah-derived weapon.
I am not suggesting that Pakistan simply attach a Fatah-II missile underneath a JF-17.
That would be technically unrealistic.

The concept would be much more sophisticated.
Pakistan could use the experience gained from the Fatah family to develop a new compact air-launched variant, specifically designed around airborne release.
A Possible Fatah Air-Launched Family
Imagine, purely as a conceptual example, a future Fatah-Air or Fatah-A family.
The weapon would be based on Pakistani missile-development knowledge but redesigned for aircraft launch.
Its requirements would include:
- a compact structure suitable for aircraft carriage;
- an appropriate propulsion system;
- an air-launch release mechanism;
- guidance and navigation suitable for stand-off attack;
- compatibility with Pakistani aircraft avionics;
- and sufficient range to provide meaningful stand-off capability.
The goal would not necessarily be to reproduce every characteristic of the ground-launched Fatah.
The goal would be to create an air-launched member of the same technological family.
That is exactly where Turkish expertise could become extremely valuable.
Turkey Could Help Pakistan Move Faster
Pakistan and Turkey already have a growing defense relationship.
Instead of limiting that relationship to the purchase of complete weapon systems, Pakistan could seek joint development and technology cooperation.
Turkey could provide expertise in areas where it has accumulated considerable practical experience: air-launch integration, missile miniaturisation, aerodynamic adaptation, aircraft-missile interface, and flight testing.
Pakistan, meanwhile, brings its own experience in missile development, aircraft integration, and the JF-17 ecosystem.
The combination could potentially produce something much more valuable than an imported missile.

The Natural Candidate

Pakistan has substantial control over the aircraft’s development and weapons-integration architecture. A future long-range stand-off missile designed specifically around the JF-17 could potentially turn the aircraft into a much more capable deep-strike platform.
The objective would not be to turn every JF-17 into a strategic strike aircraft.
Rather, selected aircraft could perform the stand-off mission.
This would give Pakistan another layer in its deterrence architecture.

What About the F-16 and Mirage?
The F-16 and Mirage fleets could also be studied for possible integration, although this would involve different technical, certification, and political considerations.
The Mirage III/V fleet is approaching the end of its useful service life in Pakistan, so it would probably make little sense to invest heavily in a completely new weapon-integration programme for the platform unless a particularly economical solution were available.
The F-16 presents another set of challenges because weapons integration is subject to aircraft configuration, certification, and US-related restrictions.
Therefore, from a long-term Pakistani perspective, the JF-17 is likely to be the more strategically attractive platform for an indigenous air-launched missile program.
The UCAV Option Could Be Even More Interesting
Turkey has also demonstrated another important concept:
- The missile does not necessarily need a fighter.
The recent AKINCI test proves the growing importance of heavy UCAVs as long-range missile carriers. The aircraft launched the UAV-300 and returned to base after completing its test mission.
Pakistan is rapidly developing its own unmanned-aircraft capabilities.
A future Pakistani heavy UCAV carrying an air-launched Fatah-derived weapon could therefore provide another layer of stand-off strike capability.

This would reduce the need to risk pilots on every long-range strike mission.
The future could, therefore, involve: JF-17 + UCAV + ground-launched missile + cruise missile + air-launched ballistic/aeroballistic missile.
That is a much more complicated problem for any adversary.
The Real Value Is Not Just Range
It would be easy to focus only on the 500-kilometre figure.
But range alone does not create strategic superiority.
The real advantage comes from combining: range + speed + mobility + launch flexibility + survivability + precision.
A ground launcher can be hidden and relocated.
A fighter can launch from a different direction.
A UCAV can approach without risking a pilot.
Multiple launch platforms can complicate enemy surveillance and defensive planning.
This is the essence of a modern multi-domain strike system.
Could it counter the S-400 or S-500?
Here, we must be realistic.
A 500-km air-launched missile should not be described as a guaranteed “S-400 killer” or “S-500 killer.”
No serious military analysis should make such a simplistic claim.
But it can provide a valuable stand-off option.
The greater the distance between the launching aircraft and the defended target, the less the aircraft itself has to expose itself to enemy air-defence systems.
At the same time, a high-speed ballistic or aeroballistic weapon creates a different interception challenge from a conventional subsonic cruise missile.
Turkey’s UAV-300 is reported as an air-launched ballistic missile, and its high speed and trajectory are specifically part of the capability being demonstrated.
That is why this category of weapon deserves attention.
Pakistan Should Learn the Turkish Method
The most important lesson from Turkey is, therefore, not: “Buy the Turkish UAV-300.”

The bigger lesson is: “Study the Turkish method.”
Turkey has demonstrated how a country can build upon an existing missile-development base and progressively move into new launch environments.
Pakistan should consider doing something similar.
The country already possesses ground-launched missile technology.
It possesses combat aircraft.
It possesses growing UCAV capabilities.
It has an established defense relationship with Turkey.
These ingredients create the possibility of a very interesting future program.
From Fatah-II, III, and Beyond
Pakistan should, therefore, examine whether elements of the technological knowledge gained through the Fatah-II and future Fatah variants can be leveraged to develop a dedicated air-launched missile.
It could be smaller and lighter than its ground-launched parent.
It could use a different propulsion configuration.

It could have a different flight profile.
But it could retain the technological DNA of the Fatah family.
This would be the Pakistani equivalent of the broader Turkish philosophy: take an existing missile-development foundation—and adapt it for air launch.
A New Dimension of Deterrence
Pakistan’s deterrence architecture has historically relied heavily upon ground-launched systems.
The next stage could be more diversified.
Imagine a future in which Pakistan possesses: mobile ground-launched missiles, submarine-launched weapons, cruise missiles, fighter-launched stand-off weapons, and UCAV-launched ballistic/aeroballistic missiles.

Such diversification makes an adversary’s defensive planning considerably more difficult.
The objective is not to make every weapon unstoppable.
The objective is to ensure that no single defensive system can provide a guarantee of protection.
Conclusion
Turkey’s transformation of its missile technology from the ground-launched domain into sophisticated air-launched weapons offers Pakistan an important lesson.
The significance of the recent UAV-300 test is, therefore, much greater than the destruction of a target at 250-plus kilometers.
It demonstrates a development philosophy.
Turkey has built upon an established missile ecosystem and pushed it into the air domain. The 300 ER represents the next stage, with Turkey publicly advertising a 500-km-plus class capability depending on launch conditions.
Pakistan should study this carefully.
The first option could be Turkish technology transfer and joint production of an air-launched weapon.
The second, and potentially more strategically valuable option, would be to use Turkish experience to develop a Pakistani air-launched missile derived from the country’s own Fatah technological base.
If successfully developed, such a weapon could potentially give JF-17s and suitable UCAVs a long-range stand-off strike capability in the 400–500 km class, subject to the actual engineering and flight-test results.
That would not make Pakistan’s aircraft immune to the S-400 or any future S-500 system.But it would give Pakistan another arrow in its strategic quiver—and in modern warfare, the ability to attack from multiple directions, multiple platforms, and multiple ranges is itself a form of deterrence.
Turkey has shown the pathway.
Pakistan should now seriously consider whether it can build its own path.
