How $6.3 Billion Was Stolen from Binance

It was 1:24 AM Pakistan time on October 30, 2026. Most people were asleep.

In one single transaction, $2.5 billion vanished from a Binance wallet. When it was over, there was just 1 ETH left sitting there. Like someone had emptied a bank vault and left a single coin on the floor just to make a point.

And that was only the start.

By the time the dust settled, the loss had grown to an estimated $6.3 billion. Binance is calling it the largest hack in crypto history. And honestly, it's hard to argue with that.

Point to be ignored by securities is that about 36 hours before the real attack, the hacker did a test run. Just $2 to $6 sent to a test wallet. Nothing that would set off alarms. Nothing anyone would notice.

Whoever did this wasn't rushing. They were patient. They were testing. They already knew what they were going to do.

Binance has laid out what happened in stages, and when you read it, it doesn't sound like some Hollywood-style break-in from the outside. It sounds worse. It sounds like an inside job without actually being one.

First, a laptop was compromised.

Not a server. Not a firewall. A DevOps engineer's laptop.

From there, the attacker got into a service container. That's an internal Binance system used to prepare withdrawal transactions. So the hacker didn't have to smash through the front door. They were already inside, using Binance's own tools to move the money out.

The first 20 minutes where it gets insane. The withdrawals started coming fast 1:05 AM: $296 million in XRP gone.

Then Bitcoin: $1.47 billion.

Then TRON: $628 million.

Then Ethereum, which was the real prize.

To get the Ethereum wallet, the attacker needed a signed authorization. And every transaction has a sequence number that goes up with each withdrawal. The authorization only works if the numbers so he grabbed 50 old, previously signed authorizations and tried them with 50 different sequence numbers. Basically throwing 50 keys at a lock and hoping one fits and really one did.

3 minutes and 24 seconds later, the wallet was empty.

Across 10 different blockchains, most of the money was drained in about twenty minutes. That's less time than it takes to order food and have it arrive.

Just how big is $6.3 billion?

Binance puts the total loss at around $6.3 billion. In Pakistani rupees, that's roughly PKR 1.74 trillion. To put that in perspective, that's almost four times bigger than the Bybit hack, which at the time felt massive.

And here's another comparison that stopped me. Pakistan's entire IMF programme is worth about $7 billion. One hacker, in one night, allegedly took almost that much.

CZ posted publicly about 30 minutes after that discussion started. By then, the race had already begun.Because here's the thing: some crypto can be frozen, and some can't.

USDT and USDC? Yes, the companies behind them can freeze those. Bitcoin and Ethereum? No. Once it's gone, it's gone.

The hacker knew that. So they started swapping USDT into Ethereum, even though they were losing more than 10% on those trades. They didn't care about the loss. They wanted the kind of crypto nobody can freeze.

They put about $60 million in USDT up as collateral on Aave and borrowed around $45 million worth of ETH. Money they will probably never pay back. Then the freeze started:

At 2:01 AM, Tether froze about $971 million in USDT.At2:04 AM: Circle froze about $823 million in USDC.

That sounds like a win, right? Except it wasn't over.

The attacker's access hadn't been fully cut off. New deposits were still coming into Binance wallets, and the hacker was still pulling money out.

Even after CZ and Binance had made public statements, the attacker reportedly managed to take another $200 million at 2:44 AM.

Withdrawals weren't fully suspended until about two hours and ten minutes after that first transaction. Two hours in crypto, that's a lifetime, let's find the thief:

According to TRM Labs, a blockchain intelligence firm, this might be the work of TraderTraitor, a North Korea-linked group connected to the Lazarus Group.

That name should ring a bell. Lazarus has been linked to some of the biggest crypto thefts ever. But to be clear, Binance hasn't officially confirmed this. It's an attribution based on patterns and analysis, not a final verdict.

Where are we now?

Binance says about $3 billion has been frozen or recovered. But frozen is not the same as recovered. Freezing just means the money can't move right now. It doesn't mean it's back in Binance's hands.

TRM Labs estimates the attacker may still be holding around $2.4 billion in Bitcoin and Ethereum.

Binance has said users' funds are safe, and that affected users will be reimbursed through its SAFU emergency fund and the company's own resources.

According to co-founder Yi He, withdrawals were expected to resume within 48 hours. At the time of this report, withdrawals were still suspended, but deposits were still working.

What should we actually learn from this?

Even the biggest exchange in the world can get hit. If Binance can lose $6.3 billion in one night, no platform is 100% safe.

So a few things worth thinking about:

1. Don't keep everything in one place. If all your crypto is on one exchange, one bad night can wipe you out. Spread it out.

2. Use more than one reputable exchange if you trade actively. Binance, Bybit, OKX, whatever you trust. Just remember, every single one carries risk. Diversifying doesn't make you bulletproof, it just means one failure doesn't take everything.

3. An exchange is not your wallet. This is the one people forget. When your crypto is sitting on an exchange, you don't really control it. You're trusting someone else to keep it safe for you.

4. For long-term holdings, think about self-custody. A hardware wallet isn't fancy, but it means you hold your own private keys. No exchange, no middleman, no 2 AM hack draining someone else's hot wallet with your money in it.

At the end of the day, the biggest lesson here is simple: in crypto, protecting what you have matters just as much as growing it. Maybe more.

We spend so much time chasing the next coin, the next pump, the next 10x. We forget the unsexy part. Security.

This heist is a reminder. A very expensive one.
