WASHINGTON (The White House) — May 9, 2026: An internal memorandum issued by the White House Butler’s Office has drawn attention after revealing extensive losses of official dining and table service items from the presidential residence, raising concerns about inventory management and operational discipline.
The document, circulated among residence staff, states that repeated incidents of “pilferage, disappearance, unauthorized relocation, and probable theft” of cutlery and related service equipment have reached levels described as “operationally disruptive and deeply irritating.”

According to the internal audit referenced in the memorandum, nearly 10 percent of authorized dining inventory could not be accounted for during a recent inspection. The missing items reportedly include dinner forks, teaspoons, serving spoons, butter knives, wine goblets, coffee cups, and other tableware used during official functions.
The memo highlights that 148 dinner forks, 119 teaspoons, and 84 dinner knives were among the items missing, alongside several specialty serving pieces and glassware.

White House Chief Butler Edwin P. Markham addressed staff directly in the memorandum, stressing that the situation had moved beyond inconvenience.
“The ongoing pilferage, disappearance, unauthorized relocation, and probable theft of White House cutlery… has now reached a level that can only be described as both operationally disruptive and deeply irritating,” the memo stated.
While the office avoided assigning direct blame, it acknowledged uncertainty about whether items were taken as souvenirs or misplaced unintentionally.
“This office does not wish to speculate as to whether these items are being pocketed as souvenirs… however, the situation is no longer amusing from an inventory standpoint,” Markham wrote.
