(Springer) — July 8, 2026: Researchers have developed and validated a rapid, non-invasive brush biopsy test that can detect oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) within approximately one hour, offering a potential alternative to many painful scalpel biopsies currently used in diagnosis.

The findings were published in the peer-reviewed journal Biomarker Research by an international research team led by Queen Mary University of London in collaboration with institutions in India. The study evaluated more than 1,000 brush biopsy samples collected from 545 patients, making it one of the largest investigations of its kind.

Oral cancer remains a significant global health challenge, with hundreds of thousands of new cases diagnosed worldwide each year. Early diagnosis is considered one of the most important factors in improving treatment outcomes, but many patients with suspicious oral lesions undergo invasive biopsies that ultimately reveal no cancer.

The researchers tested a third-generation molecular assay known as qMIDS-V3, which uses a simple brush swab instead of surgically removing tissue. According to the study, the test demonstrated high diagnostic accuracy in distinguishing oral cancer from low-risk oral lesions while potentially reducing unnecessary invasive biopsy procedures by more than 90% in suitable patients.

Lead researcher Professor Muy-Teck Teh of Queen Mary University of London said: “Oral cancer survival is directly linked to how early it is found, yet our current diagnostic pathway is blunt.”

He added: “This test changes that. It gives clinicians a rapid, accurate, and non-invasive way to triage patients, and crucially, it can be repeated.”

Researchers also highlighted that because the brush test is non-invasive, patients with persistent oral lesions could undergo repeat testing over time without the discomfort associated with multiple scalpel biopsies. This could improve surveillance of individuals considered at higher risk of developing oral cancer.

Professor Teh further noted that the research team was surprised by the performance of the brush-based test.

“We were genuinely astonished by the fact that the brush swab test performance is comparable to a microbiopsy.”

The study found that the test analyzes the activity of four genetic biomarkers obtained from cells collected through the brush swab, providing results in roughly one hour without requiring tissue removal. Researchers believe the technology could support earlier diagnosis while reducing patient discomfort and easing pressure on healthcare systems.

Despite the encouraging findings, the authors emphasized that the test is intended as a clinical triage and monitoring tool rather than a replacement for comprehensive medical assessment. Additional clinical implementation, regulatory approvals, and commercial development will be required before the technology becomes widely available in routine healthcare. Queen Mary University of London has stated it is seeking commercial partners to help bring the test into clinical practice.
