Telegram founder reveals over 70 million new users joined during Facebook outage
During the outage of Mark Zuckerberg-owned social media platforms WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram, Telegram hit a new spike of 70-million users. This 6-hour outage showed how much people from all around the world were dependent on these social media platforms and how immediately they switched to Telegram, the messaging app started by the Russian brothers Nikolai and Pavel Durov in 2013. They are also the creators of VK, the largest social media platform.

During the outage, which lasted for 6 hours, around 3.5 billion users of these apps rushed towards the social media apps like Twitter and messaging app Telegram to reconnect with their loved ones and fans. Twitter also witnessed a record number of new users during this outage. Facebook Inc. blamed this outage as a faulty configuration change in its blog on Monday. However, they didn’t specify any reason behind this, and for what purpose did this happen or whoever was behind it. People showed anger at this outage and even the Congress members of the United States of America were angry about this.

Earlier this week, some Facebook employees who did not want to be identified, told Reuters that they suspected the outage was caused by an internal error in how internet traffic is routed to the company’s computers. Employees are claiming the failures of internal communication tools and other resources that rely on the same network caused the problem. According to security experts, an unintentional error or insider sabotage are both possibilities. However, Facebook stuck to their prior statement claiming the outage was due to a faulty configuration change. Facebook is already under fire due to its policy on hate and misinformation. This outage caused Facebook to lose its shares by 4.9 percent which is its biggest loss since last November.

Commenting on this sudden rush of users to Telegram, Durov indicated that it could encounter slower speeds in some parts of the United States of America because of this spike, but all was well in the rest of the world.
